Jun Märkl, widely praised for his collaborations with PMF since his first appearance in 2004, will serve as Principal Conductor, appearing in the first half of the festival. His first program features the complete ballet score of Ravel's "Daphnis et Chloé," known for its delicate, colorful orchestration. Märkl is also known as one of the foremost interpreters of Toshio Hosokawa's music, including "Woven Dreams." Along with Berlioz's lively "Le Corsair," experience the PMF Orchestra's broad range of expressiveness!

Schubert: Symphony No. 8 in C major, D. 944 "The Great"

The culmination of the festival arrives, after a month in the making, in the form of Schubert's large-scale masterwork known as "the Great," conducted by Artistic Director Valery Gergiev. This symphony's deceptively simple structure reveals a Romantic beauty that unfolds in a way that never ceases to fascinate audiences. Also, former Wiener Philharmoniker concertmaster Rainer Küchl (Tomakomai) and Daniel Lozakovich, the prodigy taking Europe by storm (Sapporo/Kawasaki/Tokyo) will appear as soloist in the Bruch Violin Concerto No. 1! Don't miss the PMF Orchestra at its peak!

Three Academies

Three Academies

PMF's own unique music education program is known as "the Academy." PMF 2017 will feature three: the Orchestra, Conducting, and Vocal Academies. Young musicians, mostly in their 20s and selected from across the globe through online auditions, will gather in Sapporo and spend a month studying together.

Orchestra Academy

Number of participants: 90

Offering the type of experience necessary for becoming a professional orchestral player and based on rehearsals and performances of the 3 main concert programs, the Orchestra Academy also features chamber music performances, including various outreach concerts.

Conducting Academy

Number of participants: 3

Instructed by Principal Conductor Jun Märkl and centered on the 3 pieces making up the first half of PMF Orchestra Concert <Program B>, the Conducting Academy's studies culminate in performances with the PMF Orchestra.

Vocal Academy

Number of participants: 4

Gabriella Tucci, legendary soprano known for her Italian bel canto ("beautiful song") roles, will convey the essence of the bel canto style to the Vocal Academy. Members' performances are given prominent place on the final concerts in Sapporo.

A World-Class Faculty

The PMF Academy is led by world-class conductors, principal players from the major orchestras of Europe and America, and experts in various fields. A variety of leading-name conductors have to this point participated in PMF as Artistic Directors and Principal Conductors.

In addition to Artistic Director Valery Gergiev and Principal Conductor Jun Märkl, the first half of the festival will be led by players from the Wiener Philharmoniker and the Berliner Philharmoniker (PMF EUROPE) and the second half of the festival by players from major orchestras of the United States, including the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and more (PMF AMERICA). The Vocal Academy will be led by living legend of the Italian opera world, Ms. Gabriella Tucci.

The Orchestra Academy faculty, in addition to performing on PMF Orchestra Concerts alongside the Academy, will also put their artistry on display in faculty chamber music concerts.

One experience distinct to a summer music festival is an outdoor concert. Among the many outdoor concerts at PMF 2017 are the 2 ever-popular concerts at the Sapporo Art Park Outdoor Stage. Surrounded by the Art Park's beautiful natural scenery, enjoy the performances in a relaxed environment, and eat and drink if you like. All ages are welcome!

PMF Outreach Programs offer encounters that go beyond listening to a concert. Through these programs, PMF continues to seek further possibilities using the "language" of music.

PMF Link Up Concert

Elementary school students join the PMF Orchestra on this day, after practicing the recorder and singing during their music classes at school. It is an eye-opening musical experience for participating students!

Rainer Küchl Open Violin Lessons

Don't miss this chance to experience lessons given by legendary violinist Rainer Küchl, concertmaster of the Wiener Philharmoniker for 45 years, to 2 aspiring young musicians!

PMF Brass Clinic

Principal players from major American orchestras will advise Sapporo City middle- and high-school students on basic technique and practice methods.

Open Rehearsals

Some rehearsals of the Orchestra, Conducting, and Vocal Academies are open for public observation!

Educational Seminar

Principal Conductor Jun Märkl will lead a seminar immediately following his final performance with the PMF Orchestra.
