PACIFIC MUSIC FESTIVAL 2016 July 16 (Sat) - August 4 (Tue), 2016

At PMF 2016, the 27th implementation since its founding by Leonard Bernstein, a wide variety of concerts will be presented revolving around those presented by the PMF Orchestra, featuring Maestro Valery Gergiev in his 2nd year as Artistic Director, and renowned Musical Director of the Real Orquesta Sinfónica de Sevilla John Axelrod as Principal Conductor. And continuing on from PMF 2015, both the Conducting and Vocal Academies will be implemented as part of comprehensive educational music festival fostering of young musicians at this.

The Maestros

The Sixth PMF Artistic Director Valery Gergiev

Leading the PMF Orchestra in their main and final program featuring Shostakovich's Symphony No. 8, performed for the first time at PMF. In 2015, Gergiev's performance at Sapporo Concert Hall Kitara was subsequently streamed online, reverberating across the globe. His PMF 2016 performance is not to be missed!

PMF GALA Concert

The annual celebratory concert held on PMF's final day at Sapporo Concert Hall Kitara. Enjoy a range of performances from chamber to orchestral music with the guidance of an MC in Part I, culminating in the audience singing along with the orchestra for the original PMF Song ~Jupiter~. Part II closes the GALA with Gergiev conducting the PMF Orchestra!

Three Academies

PMF's own unique music education program is known as “the Academy.” Continuing on from last year, 3 Academies - Orchestra, Conducting, and Vocal - will be implemented at PMF 2016. Young musicians, mostly in their 20s and selected from across the globe through auditions held online will gather in Sapporo and spend a month studying together.

Orchestra AcademyNumber of participants: 90

Offering the type of experience necessary for becoming a professional orchestral player and based on rehearsals and performances of the 3 main concert programs, the Orchestra Academy also features chamber music performances, including various Outreach Concerts.

Conducting AcademyNumber of participants: 3

Instructed by Principal Conductor John Axelrod and based primarily on the 3 pieces making up the first half of PMF Orchestra Concert <Program B>, the Conducting Academy's study culminates in performances with the orchestra.

Vocal AcademyNumber of participants: 4

Gabriella Tucci, legendary soprano known for her Italian bel canto ("beautiful song") roles, will convey the essence of the bel canto style to the Vocal Academy, with performances at the GALA Concert and Picnic Concert.
