Pacific Music Festival 2015 July 12 (Sun) - August 4 (Tue), 2015

With the August 4 Tokyo Concert,
PMF 2015 was brought to its successful close.

To all who participated - Academy members, conductors, faculty, and listeners - we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for supporting PMF!

A new, revamped quarter century of PMF will begin with its 26th implementation in 2015,
featuring Artistic Director Valery Gergiev, starting on July 12 (Sun).
As Principal Conductor, Jun Märkl, whose past engagements include Music Directorship of the Orchestre National de Lyon,
will make his 4th appearance at PMF.
As Guest Conductor, Andris Poga, Musical Director of the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra
and up-and-coming conductor whose recent engagements include that with the NHK Symphony Orchestra,
will make his first appearance at PMF.
Also, a prize winner of the International Tchaikovsky Piano Competition,
considered one of the most authoritative competitions in the world, is planned to attend as a soloist.
Here is an introduction to things to look forward to in PMF 2015.

Artists Active on the World Stage

Valery Gergiev

This universally renowned leader of the current classical music world will make his highly anticipated return in the 2015-2017 seasons as PMF Artistic Director! The coming together of PMF's rich 25-year tradition and the impeccable musicianship of the master will mark the beginning of a new quarter century of PMF.

Jun Märkl

A maestro active on the world stage, having served as Music Director of both the Lyon National Orchestra and the MDR Symphony Orchestra Leipzig, Märkl has also given many tour de force performances with the PMF Orchestra. He will lead Program A in a program featuring well-loved pieces from central Europe.

Andris Poga

This young maestro, in addition to serving as Musical Director of his own country's Latvian National Symphony Orchestra, continues to make guest appearances with orchestras in Europe and Japan. He will lead the PMF Orchestra in Program B, centered on Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 5 and including exquisite sounds of Mozart.

An International Tchaikovsky
Competition Prize Winner

The soloist of Program C, led by Valery Gergiev, will be a prize winner of the 2015 International Tchaikovsky Piano Competition, which has a history of being the most reliable gateway to success for young musicians. This performance, with the young Academy performing with a soloist of their own generation, is eagerly anticipated.

Tomo Matsubara

Tomo Matsubara, tenor

Active not only in performing recitals and oratorios in Europe and all over Japan, but also alongside the likes of the Munich Radio Orchestra, the New Japan Philharmonic, and the Osaka Philharmonic Orchestra. This is his first appearance at PMF, where he will appear as soloist in Mahler's Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen ("Songs of a Wayfarer").

Main Attractions

PMF GALA Concert

The PMF GALA Concert marks the final day in Sapporo Concert Hall Kitara. Part I consists mainly of a variety of chamber music, and includes the PMF Song ~Jupiter~, sung along with the entire audience, and more, offering the fun of the classical music experience. Part II consists of the Program C Concert with the PMF Orchestra and Artistic Director Valery Gergiev. This also represents the culmination of the Academy members' hard work to that point. Why not dress up a bit and spend a Saturday afternoon at this glamorous concert?

The Sounds of PMF VIENNA and PMF BERLIN

A world-class faculty consisting of PMF VIENNA (members of the Vienna Philharmonic) and PMF BERLIN (members of the Berlin Philharmonic) will lead the Academy during the first half of the festival. In addition to instructing, they will present uniquely precious performances for your listening enjoyment.

Link Up Concert

Based on the educational program of New York's Carnegie Hall, this special music education program for elementary school students was implemented for the first time in Japan at PMF 2013. Children have the opportunity to sing and play recorders along with the PMF Orchestra, which provides them with the opportunity to encounter music of the highest level.

Enrichment of the Music Education Program

Establishment of Vocal and Conducting Academies

At PMF 2015, in addition to the Orchestra Academy, Vocal and Conducting Academies will also be implemented. Applications are being accepted for this season's auditions, now entirely carried out online, until early January.

Orchestra Academy

The Orchestra Academy will be led by principal players of major orchestras the world over. The first half will be led by PMF EUROPE, made up of members of the Vienna Philharmonic and the Berlin Philharmonic, and the second half by PMF AMERICA, with principal players from major orchestras of the United States including the Philadelphia Orchestra and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

Vocal AcademyNumber of participants: 4

The prominent Roman soprano Gabriella Tucci will instruct the next generation of singers. Ms. Tucci has offered many tour de force performances of a wide range of repertoire at the world's major opera houses, and is now actively engaged in educating the younger generation. Academy members will be trained in performance, expression, projection, and diction, primarily related to opera arias and songs, culminating in performances at the GALA Concert and Picnic Concert.

Conducting AcademyNumber of participants: 3

The Conducting Academy will study conducting technique and musical interpretation with Guest Conductor Andris Poga, centered mainly on Mozart's Symphony No. 34, culminating in a performance with the PMF Orchestra. In addition, they will have the opportunity to audit rehearsals with the PMF Orchestra led by Principal Conductor Jun Märkl.
