We are deeply saddened to hear of the sudden passing of Maestro Luis Biava on March 25.
Biava served as principal 2nd violin and Conductor-in-Residence with the Philadelphia Orchestra, and for PMF as violin faculty, Conductor, and Senior Artistic Administrator, participating 12 times from 2001 onward. His contributions to the festival and to the citizens of Sapporo were broad-ranging and innumerable. Not only did he lead the PMF Orchestra in an array of concerts, such as the Bernstein 90th anniversary concert, but his deep musical understanding and gentle kindness impacted the lives of a great many Academy members, providing them with leadership by example as well. We are forever grateful for all Maestro Biava did for young musicians, audiences, and communities throughout his career. Our sincerest condolences go out to his family and friends across the globe.
