PMF 2025 Highlights

It all starts with Candide and sublime horns!

PMF 2025 Opening Night

July 9 (Wed) Sapporo Concert Hall Kitara

PMF kicks off vibrantly with the overture to Candide, by PMF-founder Leonard Bernstein. Conductor Karina Canellakis makes her return to the PMF stage after her time as a PMF Academy member, having now secured positions with world-class orchestras and international acclaim. The highly varied 1-hour Opening Concert also features chamber music performed by PMF faculty, and its centerpiece is Schumann's Konzertstück, with a sublime convergence of 4 world-class horn soloists from the LA Phil, Berlin Phil, and Japan!

Excitement builds for Canellakis’ triumphant return with her “Titan”

PMF Orchestra Concert in Tomakomai

July 12 (Sat) Tomakomai Shimin Kaikan

PMF Orchestra Concert

July 13 (Sun) Sapporo Concert Hall Kitara

Canellakis participated in PMF 2012 as a member of the Conducting Academy before embarking on her journey straight to the forefront, where she remains. To mark her return to PMF, she chose Mahler’s monumental Symphony No. 1 “Titan.” How will she bring the massive, diverse PMF Orchestra, along with faculty members of PMF EUROPE, together as one? How will they rise to this challenge, and together how much synergy and emotion will they create? One senses a legendary performance in the making. And Sibelius’ Violin concerto performed by world-class soloist Karen Gomyo is not to be missed!

Master of the Germanic repertoire Marek Janowski, whose remarkable performances across the globe have captured the essence of music through his uncompromising, rigorous commitment to craft, makes his long-awaited first appearance at PMF. The authority he brings to the young musicians at PMF will surely guide them to greater heights. The program features 4 German Romantic masterpieces – the opportunity to hear both Schumann’s 3rd symphony and Strauss’ Death and Transfiguration under Janowski’s baton is a rare and compelling treat. PMF audiences can also experience cutting-edge master of the cello Steven Isserlis, whose mere presence transforms a stage, as he offers his immersive interpretation of Schumann’s Cello Concerto! Incredible as it seems, Janowski and Isserlis will perform together for the first time at PMF.

The Stars Align – PMF AMERICA

Major US orchestral players come together, only at PMF!

PMF AMERICA Concert

July 23 (Wed) Sapporo Concert Hall Kitara, Small Hall

Star players from 7 major orchestras of the United States come together to teach the PMF Academy, and their collaborations result in a fascinating chamber program that can only be heard at PMF.

The San Francisco Symphony's principal trumpet and trombone will together present a new work by American composer Jeffrey Holmes, and the principal violist of the Washington National Opera and principal oboist of the Metropolitan Opera will perform C.M. Loeffler's impressionistic, almost improvisational Deux Rapsodies. "Luminous" by Dai Fujikura, now one of Japan's foremost composers, was composed for LA Philharmonic principal timpanist Joseph Pereira; it will now have its Japan premiere, performed by Pereira himself. In the second half, a boisterous R. Strauss musical tale emerges from an ensemble of string and wind players, and the evening culminates in the lush Jean Cras quintet for harp, flute, and strings – a rare treat.
You won't want to miss a single moment.
