Established as one of the world’s foremost flutists, Denis Bouriakov has earned top prizes at numerous prestigious competitions, including First Prize at the Prague Spring Competition in 2009, as well as awards at the Carl Nielsen Competition, the Jean-Pierre Rampal Competition, the Kobe Competition, the Nicolet Competition, and the ARD Competition in Munich, among others. Since 2015, he has served as Principal Flutist of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, appointed by Gustavo Dudamel, following his tenure as Principal Flutist of the Metropolitan Opera under James Levine. Balancing both solo and orchestral careers, Bouriakov regularly performs concertos and recitals around the globe. He has collaborated with many prominent conductors, including Valery Gergiev, Daniel Harding, and Gustavo Dudamel. His extensive discography includes numerous recordings with piano and orchestras, and he has a strong online presence, with hundreds of high-quality videos of his live performances available. A dedicated educator, Bouriakov teaches masterclasses worldwide and has held positions as a Visiting Professor at the Royal Academy of Music in London, his alma mater, since 2022. He also serves as Guest Professor at Elizabeth University in Hiroshima, Japan. Known for his extraordinary virtuosity and musicianship, Bouriakov frequently explores beyond the standard flute repertoire, transcribing and performing violin and cello concertos and sonatas to expand the limits of flute technique and artistry. Many of his arrangements have been published by Theodore Presser, with more on the way. He was a member of the 2003 PMF Orchestra. This is his seventh appearance at PMF as a faculty member since 2017.
