Josua Bartsch studied Vocal Music with Gotthold Schwarz and Hans Joachim Beyer, and Vocal Physiology, as well as Music History at Hochschule für Musik und Theater "Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy" Leipzig, obtaining a Concert Artist Diploma in Vocal Music. He was a contract singer at Opera Leipzig, during which time he sang varied works from baroque to contemporary, directed by distinguished directors including Hans Joachim Herz, George Tabori, Istvan Szabo, Ruth Berghaus, Willy Decker, Gian-Carlo del Monaco and John Dew. He also performed in productions conducted by distinguished conductors including Kurt Masur, Lothar Zagrosek, Jirji Kout, Udo Zimmermann, and Edo de Waart. He has appeared at concert halls and theaters in Jerusalem, Amsterdam and Utrecht. He has also worked on numerous TV/Radio broadcasting programs for Netherlands Public Broadcasting (VARA) and Central German Broadcasting (MDR).
A native German speaker as well as a fluent speaker of Japanese, Mr. Bartsch has been professionally teaching German and Latin diction for stage and concerts to young Japanese singers since he started living in Tokyo in 1997. He has been teaching diction and interpretation to choirs and solo singers for numerous concerts and stage productions of the Saito Kinen Festival, the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra and the Tokyo Opera Singers.

2006: Narrator of Gurre-Lieder with the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra conducted by Naoto Otomo (Kyoto Concert Hall/Suntory Hall).
2013: Samiel and Narrator in "Der Freischütz" with the Tokyo Mozart Players, conducted by Ryusuke Numajiri.
2014: Der Haushofmeister in "Ariadne auf Naxos" with the Paulownia Chamber Orchestra conducted by Naofumi Takahashi (New National Theatre).

Since 1998 he has been a moderator, singer and narrator for NHK"s German Radio and TV Course. Since 2004 he has also been a jury member for the Yuai (Fraternity) German Lied Competition in Tokyo.
He is on the teaching faculty of German and German Diction at Musashino Academia Musicae.
