PMF News - Winter 2023-2024

Happy New Year! We at PMF sincerely hope that 2024 will bring peace and joy to all of you.

Thanks to the impact of the highly successful December release of the film “Maestro,” we have recently been reliving many fond memories of Leonard Bernstein, who founded PMF in his final year. PMF could not have sustained itself this long without the generosity and dedication to the education of younger generations that Bernstein poured into it.

In Japan, the start of a new year is normally a cheerful time, but this year it has been overshadowed by the powerful Noto Peninsula earthquake and a string of subsequent destructive events. Recovery efforts are ongoing, and we hope that support from across Japan and the world will help the residents of impacted areas to stay resilient during this challenging time. Our hearts go out to all who are being impacted, and it is with great humility that we continue to prepare for PMF 2024.

PMF 2024 Auditions have closed!

Applications for the PMF 2024 Orchestra Academy were accepted from November through January 17, and the selection process has now begun. All results will be announced by March. We are grateful to all who applied!

“Maestro” and a PMF alumnus

The film “Maestro” gave many people who knew Leonard Bernstein the opportunity to reflect anew on his life and work. Among them is Alastair Blayden, current sub principal cellist of the London Symphony Orchestra (LSO), who speaks of his memories of studying with Bernstein, and how big an impact it had on him at the first PMF, in 1990. PMF was originally founded by Bernstein and his associates along with the LSO, and we consider it very important to pass on the legacy of the people who founded this festival, and to share the voices of people who experienced that special summer as students.

PMF FROM GENERATION TO GENERATION / Catharina Feyen, double bass / PMF 2019

As part of an ongoing series of interviews with PMF alumni and faculty, in this issue and the next we present interviews with 2 alumni − a student and teacher: Catharina Feyen (double bass, PMF 2019), currently active as a member of the Royal Opera House Orchestra (Covent Garden) and her teacher Luis Cabrera (double bass, PMF 2004, 2006), principal double bass of the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra and professor at the Guildhall School of Music. For this issue we introduce Catharina and her thoughts on PMF.

What made you apply for PMF?

My teacher at the time, Luis Cabrera, made me aware of the festival and spoke very highly of his time there. Looking into the festival I knew I had to apply. It had everything a young musician could dream of in a summer festival: great conductors, musicians from some of the best orchestras in the world coaching you, amazing repertoire and all of this in Japan in one of the best concert halls in the world!

Is there any difference between the way you thought of PMF before participating and now?

Having done more local, small-scale festivals before PMF I was not quite sure how different this experience would be but PMF exceeded all of my expectations! It was truly one of the most inspiring summers of my life. Participating in the festival was a great preparation for working life as an orchestral musician. Not only on the playing side − learning how to be more aware, blend, communicate on stage etc. − but also learning how to manage the busy schedule and how to properly prepare the repertoire so that you can make the most out of the rehearsals and concerts. Above all that I got to meet so many wonderful people and now know amazing musicians all over the world!

What do you hope the next generation of young musicians will take away from their time at PMF?

Apart from the invaluable experience of being part of an orchestra like this, some of my favourite memories of my time in Japan were getting to know the local culture together with my colleagues as well as getting to know everyone in the orchestra and their own culture. I have some great memories with friends in Sapporo that I will not forget for a very long time.
My advice to Academy members coming for the first time would be to prepare as much as you can beforehand because it will be a wild ride and that way you can truly enjoy it. I also urge everyone to come with an open mind and take in as much as you can, not only music-wise.

PMF in their own words

In this series we share messages from PMF faculty members and more, as they address what PMF means to them. We hope that their messages will resonate, and that you will consider making a donation to help sustain the work of the festival.

In this issue, one of the longest-serving PMF faculty members, Stephen Rose, principal second violin of the Cleveland Orchestra, kindly shares his thoughts with us.

PMF in their own words: Stephen Rose

PMF is a non-profit organization, sustained by the generosity of individuals like you. It provides a uniquely multicultural learning environment for young musicians from all over the world, increasing international mutual understanding alongside musicianship.

Help sustain the standard and quality of the festival!

This month, Hokkaido Bank, a supporting company of the festival, will celebrate the new year together with their clients with music performed by a PMF alumni string quartet, and in February, Sapporo City Nishi Ward will present an alumni octet concert, with strings, woodwinds, brass, percussion, and piano performing a program including pieces specially arranged for the octet. Also, an alumni string quartet is scheduled to perform at the opening reception of this year's Sapporo Snow Festival!
