Donations

In 2011, the PMF Organizing Committee held a number of charity concerts under the slogan "Ganbare Nippon, Ganbarou Nippon (Cheer up Japan!)" to bring hope and courage to Japan through music in the aftermath of the March 11 Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami.
As charity events, the PMF Orchestra Concert was held at Sapporo Concert Hall on July 30, and the Nomura Presents PMF Charity Concert was hosted jointly with the Nomura Group at Tokyo Opera City Concert Hall on August 4. All proceeds from the ticket sales of the two concerts, amounting to approximately 14 million yen, were earmarked for donation to victims of the disaster.

Four artists - PMF Artistic Director Fabio Luisi, world-renowned baritone Thomas Hampson, PMF Faculty and former Wiener Philharmoniker member Peter Schmidl, and Staatskapelle Berlin concert master Lothar Strauss - donated a combined total of 6.3 million yen. Further donations made through collection boxes at the concert venues amounted to approximately 870,000 yen.

In total, approximately 21.24 million yen was collected for the disaster-affected regions.
The PMF Organizing Committee would like to thank all those who contributed to the initiative.

Donation beneficiaries

In its role as a music festival host, the PMF Organizing Committee examined the idea of offering support to the disaster-affected areas mainly through music-related organizations. After due consideration, it decided to donate 10 million yen to the School Music Revival Fund established by the Japan Musical Instruments Association, 5 million yen to the Iwate Band Association, and approximately 1.78 million yen to the Japanese Red Cross Society. The proceeds from the concert jointly hosted with the Nomura Group (approximately 4.4 million yen) were used to donate musical instruments through the Nomura Group to elementary and junior high schools in the affected areas.

Regarding reasons for the selection of these organizations as beneficiaries, the School Music Revival Fund helps to inspect and repair musical instruments at kindergartens and at elementary, junior high and high schools in the affected areas. The PMF Organizing Committee therefore decided to support their activities with donations in order to help create environments that will allow disaster-affected children to enjoy music again.

The Iwate Band Association helps local school children and adults engaged in wind-instrument musical pursuits to continue their activities and participate in related concerts. Although the Iwate Band Association is not the only band association in the affected prefectures, the PMF Organizing Committee selected it as a beneficiary because it was among the first to accept and allocate donations independently, and has continued relief activities with great enthusiasm while publicizing its support activities as needed. The Committee plans to use donations to support the association's efforts to promote music-related activities by children in affected schools and communities.

The PMF Organizing Committee also donated 1.78 million yen to the Japanese Red Cross Society to support disaster victims. This amount includes the donations from Peter Schmidl and Lothar Strauß, who requested that their contributions be channeled through the organization.
