The Pacific Music Festival Organizing Committee has announced that Maestro Fabio Luisi will be appointed the PMF Artistic Director.
Maestro Fabio Luisi will become the PMF Artistic Director starting with the 21st PMF in the year 2010, for a period of three years. As the Artistic Director, he will be in charge of determining the artistic and educational contents, including the selection of programs and guest conductors for the festival. He will also be advising in the curriculum planning and selection of faculty members and soloists.

It is a real honor for me to accept this offer from the PMF Organizing Committee to be the Artistic Director. I feel a large responsibility has fallen upon me. As the Artistic Director, I am determined to continue the high standard of PMF as well as maintain the reputation of the festival. I deeply thank the PMF Organizing Committee and Professor Schmidl for proposing this position to me.
I have visited Japan many times with the Saechsische Staatskapelle Dresden and Saechsische Staatsoper Dresden. My first visit to the Sapporo Concert Hall Kitara was with the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, and my second visit was with the PMF Orchestra. People in Sapporo are very warm and they have listened to our performances with eagerness. My impression of Sapporo, and Hokkaido, is that unlike other cities in Japan, it is very quiet with an abundance of nature and greenery. I like Sapporo very much.
I plan to visit Japan again with the Staatskapelle and the Wiener Symphoniker next year, but I feel that I have gained a very important title this time to continue my activities in Japan.
I still need some time before I can announce any concrete program. But I do feel that it is very important to follow the wonderful principal and purpose announced by the founder Mo. Leonard Bernstein. I would like to work together not only in musical aspects but also work to elevate our relationships as human beings; to educate young musicians from all over the world to become members of professional orchestras or to become professional musicians. This would be my goal as the Artistic Director.
